Empty Words, Empty Worship
I want to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a worshiper. I am a musician. I am a worship leader. I love to spend those intimate experiences in communion with God through singing and playing keyboard. However, I am not always in the right mindset or right attitude for worship.
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” - John 4:23
I feel like more and more Christians have a problem with this very thing. We will be singing worship songs, but we are just going through the motions and not actually meaning what we are saying. Sometimes I find myself singing the song from memory and thinking about something completely different.
This is like lying and making false promises to God. For example, if you sing, “Lord, I give you my heart. I give You my soul. I live for You alone…” yet you don’t mean it, you are lying to the Lord. My opinion, don’t sing it unless you mean it!
Another example that this video makes is to about the pride and performance on stage. Too many worship leaders are on stage and singing for the wrong reasons. The main and only reasons that we should be on stage as worship leaders is to present our gifts to the Lord and worship Him with them, and usher the people into an intimate experience with God. Our job is to set an atmosphere that helps the people focus on the goodness of God and usher them into worship. If we are there to perform, showcase our talents, or have people focus on how good we are… WE NEED TO GET OFF THE STAGE!
We need to revolutionize the way we worship and lead worship. The best way to do this is to be humble, focus on God, and know that it’s not about us! God is the one who needs to be receiving the praise and worship. He is the one that gave us the talents and abilities that we have, and He wants us to use them to bring Him glory.
I know I am ranting but hey, I’m passionate. I hope you like the funny video, and I know it’s extreme. Honestly though, how many people fall prey to this kind of thinking?
So what are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Let me hear you! I challenge you to put your opinion on this subject below, or put an example in your own life where you have struggled with this, or maybe you have a story about someone doing it wrong and what they could have done to do it right.
Food for thought.
One-Liner of the Day: “The freshness of being evaporates under mere repetition.” -Alfred North Whitehead
We all have had a point in our lives where the things that used to be exciting and new get old and dull. If we hear a song over and over it starts to get annoying, and we no longer hear the meaning that the song is meant to portray.
Don’t allow your relationship with the Lord to turn dull and routine. A relationship with God is supposed to consistently be full of growth and change. God doesn’t change, but as we continue to get closer with the Lord, we begin to change and the relationship dynamic begins to change.
God wants to continue to help you grow, and He wants you to sing Him a NEW song.
So what new thing is God challenging you to do? What avenue in your life does He want you to grow in?
